Usage Policies

Building trust within a network requires the ability to identify and segment services and users based upon the impact of their relative value as a subscriber and adherence to contractual policies. By establishing usage policies and monitoring conformance, operators are able to identify and control rogue apps, content providers and external sources of content to protect their subscribers and their subscribers' trust in the network.

The AdaptiveMobile Network+ Protection Platform (NPP+) allows an operator to define a policy hierarchy for usage controls, and determine trust based on the user's historical reputation. For example:

  • Premium content providers delivering services and collecting revenue via shortcodes can be managed to offer:
    • Enforcement of individual subscriber decisions on volume of messages and spend, STOP commands and time of day restrictions
    • Compliance of message format with guidelines for labelling advertising content
  • Restrict exposure to new accounts with limited message and call volumes split by national and international destinations
  • Identification of suspect users through establishing acceptable usage levels for email, and MMS, including volumes, sending rates, max recipients and size
  • Protection of subscribers from rogue apps, through notifications of unknown app-generated use of short codes and SMS

Machine to Machine (M2M) services can be quickly supported through the AdaptiveMobile NPP+, with groups of devices protected against exploitation and compromise by defining closed group communication policies and usage controls, for example stopping an embedded SIM in a satellite navigation device or remote appliance from being able to receive communications from unauthorised sources, or to send/connect with any unauthorised destination; and with the option of also ensuring content level validation. The NPP+ simplifies management of remote device policies, as all enforcement is network based and so avoids the need for dissemination of updates to remote nodes.
